Episode 22 - Do it Anyway
Welcome back to The Vision to Victory Podcast. I’m your host, Luke, and today we’re building on last week’s episode where we talked about how to move from where you are to where you want to be in life. We covered four key components of that process, and today I want to zoom in on one of them—because I believe if you can master this one mindset, it’ll unlock huge progress in every area of your life.
Before we dive in, let’s quickly recap those four components:
Be honest with yourself—about where you are and why you’re there.
Directly address what’s holding you back—no excuses.
Make a plan—even if it’s a bad one.
Do it anyway—even when you don’t feel like it.
Today, we’re going to unpack that last one: Do it anyway.
Why “Do It Anyway” Matters
This mindset shows up in every successful person’s life. Whether it’s someone crushing it in their career, getting healthier, building better relationships—you name it—this is the through-line. They do things even when they don’t feel like it.
Let’s be honest. We all have excuses. And in most cases, we’re the ones getting in our own way. We talk ourselves out of chasing the things we actually want. When you take a step back, it’s kind of crazy—we’re the obstacle.
So today, I want to call out some of the most common excuses that show up and break down how to move through them.
Excuse #1: “I Don’t Feel Like It”
This is probably the most common excuse out there. And it’s deceptively powerful, because it’s subtle. We tell ourselves, “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I’m not in the mood,” and it feels harmless. But if I only worked out when I felt like it, I’d never work out. I’d be unhealthy. Overweight. Out of shape. That’s just real.
At some point, we have to decide: are we going to be led by our emotions, or by our priorities? For me, being healthy is a priority—so my feelings don’t get a vote.
Excuse #2: “I’m Too Busy”
We’ve all said this one. But the truth is, this isn’t a time issue—it’s a priority issue. You can look at your calendar, your energy, your money... that’s where your real priorities show up.
If you spend four hours a day on social media or video games, that’s your priority. You’ve already made the trade.
The reality is that life is full of trade-offs. Sometimes, you have to take time away from something good so you can invest in something better. And as your goals shift, your schedule should shift too.
Excuse #3: “I Don’t Know What to Do”
This one pops up all the time—especially when we’re starting something new. And yeah, it can feel overwhelming. But more often than not, this is just another form of procrastination.
We live in a time where it’s never been easier to figure things out. You can search online, read a guide, watch a video—resources are everywhere.
You don’t have to know everything. You just have to take one step. Any small action creates momentum and breaks that feeling of being stuck. And if something feels too complex, break it down. Start smaller. Simpler. But start.
Other Excuses That Creep In
There are a few other excuses that come up all the time:
“I’m not motivated.”
“I’m still hurt by the past.”
“I’m blaming someone else.”
“I’m not smart enough, strong enough, young enough, old enough... whatever.”
Here’s the truth: it’s all just noise. Every single one of those thoughts is an excuse—and they’re keeping you stuck.
The Shift: Choosing to Act Anyway
When you strip everything down, every excuse comes back to resistance. And the way to fight resistance is not with feelings or motivation—it’s with action.
You don’t need to wait until you feel like it. You don’t need permission from your emotions.
You just have to do it anyway.
That’s the difference-maker.
Kobe Bryant on Mental Toughness
One of my favorite quotes on this topic comes from Kobe Bryant. He said:
“I have self-doubt. I have insecurity. I have fear of failure... I just want to chill. You don’t deny it. You don’t capitulate to it. You embrace it.”
This is someone at the top of his game. He had everything—talent, success, championships—and even he had doubt and fear. But he didn’t let it stop him. That’s the mindset we’re talking about here.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, successful people do consistently what others do occasionally. That’s the difference.
Your feelings don’t get to dictate your future. Your values do. When your values guide your actions, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient—that’s when things change.
So wherever you’re at, whatever you’ve been putting off—stand up to yourself.
And do it anyway.
